Domenico Zonin president of the Zonin Group

An important generational passage has taken place for Italian wine. It’s official: the new president of Zonin1821 is Domenico Zonin. Gianni Zonin has passed the baton to his eldest son, already managing director of the family’s winemaking group. Domenico leads the company together with his brothers Francesco and Michele, vice presidents with Giuseppe Zonin, and Massimo Tuzzi, general manager and now also managing director. It is the missing piece of the puzzle of a career path that marks the future of this impressive private wine-producing company, the largest in Italy in terms of hectares of vineyards. Domenico Zonin, the new president, defines it as “the last formal step.”

Domenico Zonin talks about the generational passage

“The governance has changed, but the line followed up till now by the Zonin Group will continue without interruption, according to the path we started out on ten years ago,” explained Domenico Zonin to us just now. “Ours has been a very slow and gradual generational change, without traumatic transitions. Starting in 2006, when Francesco, Michele and I took over the various areas of responsibility: production, sales and marketing, administration and management control. Since then, Gianni has taken a step back, gradually leaving the ordinary management and at the same time ceding the company shares to us, his sons, until reaching 100%. Two years ago the system changed, passing from this “tripartition” to single management (with Gianni as president, Domenico as managing director, and Francesco and Michele as vice-presidents).”

The future of the Zonin Group

Ten years are a long time. “In this period the company has shed its skin to become larger and more international. Today more than 80% of our production is aimed at abroad, where we have sales branches in the US, the UK and, in the last year, also in China. The turnover has kept up with this growth, with a significant increase from 160 million euros in 2014 to 186 million in 2015. Now we have set up a three-year plan to go over 200 million euros,” announced the new president. “This generational passage has managed to strengthen the company. The future of Zonin is more and more international and managerial, as the appointment of Tuzzi confirms.” A keyword? “We will continue to invest in quality, enhancing the wines from every estate and aiming at high-level and more sophisticated consumers.”
