Ornellaia: limited edition at Sotheby’s
Great news for collectors of fine wines. Ornellaia and Sotheby’s present the Ornellaia Archivio Storico Project: a limited collection of old vintages of rare bottles, kept in the Bolgheri cellars until now, destined to collectors all over the world. “Ornellaia is a modern legend that I have had the privilege of following since its creation, watching it grow to success”: the words of Serena Sutcliffe MW, honorary chairman of Sotheby’s Wine, confirm the value of this exclusive project. She selected the vintages for the Ornellaia Archivio Storico 2016, in May 2015. They are the 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2006.
Where to buy Ornellaia Archivio Storico
Every bottle of Ornellaia Archivio Storico has an exclusive label and is packaged individually in a wooden case. They come in different formats – bottles (0.75 litres) in batches of 6, Magnums (1.5 litres) in batches of 3, Jeroboams (3 litres) and Methuselahs (6 litres) individually – and will be sold at auction at Sotheby’s in New York, London and Hong Kong in the first half of 2016. The first, much-awaited appointment is on 27th February in New York. At the same time, from 1st October, a limited number of 6-bottle batches (one for each vintage: 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999) will be on sale in some selected wine shops all over the world: only 150 vertical batches in total. “When tasting the vintage wines to go under the hammer, we were struck by the discovery of their longevity, which always comes out in the long and persistent aftertaste of the wines. The Ornellaia wines are full of joy and gravity, pleasure and reflection. We should all aspire to age with such grace,” commented Sutcliffe MW.
The treasure kept in the Ornellaia cellar
Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, managing director of Ornellaia, points out, “I am convinced that one of the great pleasures that the most refined wines can give us is the discovery of the nuances and character they develop through time. In particular, the wines proposed as part of the Ornellaia Archivio Storico have been left to rest undisturbed to age in excellent conditions in our cellars since they were made, and never touched since. The number of bottles that our collection has to offer is very limited; in many cases they are the very last bottles that we can offer. Starting from the 1994 vintage, each bottle of Ornellaia Archivio Storico takes the collector on an unrepeatable journey through the wines and history of Ornellaia.”
