Red Gorgona is born, after five years of love

Red Gorgona is born, after five years of love

Gorgona, the last penitentiary island. In August 2012, the Frescobaldi Marquises decided on a socially responsible path: to teach the vine and wine trade to inmates and to create a special wine, producing only 2,700 bottles. A white, and now a Red Gorgona made from Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero.

The Barrique, as it once was

It is a difficult operation, with thousands of bureaucratic difficulties and procedures. It takes us on an imaginary trip to times when the most requested wine travelled by barrel, and the barrique was used more for transport than for improvement. This is what is happening on Gorgona: wine made from Ansonica and Vermentino is aged in barriques (one year old), but mainly because in the winter following the harvest it is easier to transfer it by sea to the mainland, to the group’s cellars.

Double novelty: Red Gorgona aged in terracotta

A few rows of red grapes, 728 mixed vines of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero, make the 660 bottles of Red Gorgona, which will not be released to the market, considering the low production, but presented to the best customers. The winemaking is curious: fermentation takes place in open barriques, followed by ageing in 4-hectolitre vases. It is the first time that Frescobaldi has used terracotta. The idea comes from the fact that wine in wood would need to be topped up, but not having enough wine, it would be necessary to add a different wine, while the desire was to leave free expression to the grapes picked in Gorgona.

Tasting Red Gorgona 2015

Like a fairy-tale, with notes of eastern spices, plum, sour cherry jam and cherries in alcohol. It is warm and ripe on the palate, while maintaining a certain freshness. Remarkably lingering and an outstanding Mediterranean finish of rosemary and mastic tree. The tannins are delicate, they are present but moderate. 94/100
