Rocca delle Macìe A restyling with Gran Selezione

Rocca delle Macìe A restyling with Gran Selezione

It was back in 1973 when a well-known movie producer, Italo Zingarelli, decided to realize his dream of creating a winery within the heart of Chianti Classico. Today his son Sergio with his wife Daniela and his sister Sandra are running the winery with passion and are creating uniquely Tuscan wines that are sold throughout the world. A third generation of the family is also involved with Giulia and Andrea working in the winery and Fabio promoting the wines to the Asian market.

The winery has grown from two hectares to 200 hectares with six different proprieties:

Le Macìe, Sant’Alfonso, Fizzano and le Tavolelle within Chianti Classico; Campomaccione and Casamaria in Maremma, in the area of Morellino di Scansano DOCG. “Our work in the vineyards is fundamental,” noted Sergio Zingarelli, who is currently the President of the Chianti Classico Consortium. “We are moving ahead to replant some of the older vines that go back to 1974 and 1975, because they are no longer guaranteeing the quality that we demand. The program to replant the vines is part of ‘Chianti Classico 2000’, a study that was undertaken by the Consortium that has found and selected specifi c clones that work best for each vineyard.” The winery has chosen to focus on indigenous grapes, the true ambassadors of the terroir. Among the varieties selected, it is the Sangiovese that offers the most promise and with which they planted an addition eight hectares.

The real news is the Gran Selezione Chianti Classico designation, that Sergio Zingarelli as the President of the Consortium helped to create. For their winery, Sergio Zingarelli mentions the Riserva di Fizzano. “This is a historic cru for the winery that we have been making for 30 years and that now is designated as a Gran Selezione wine starting with the 2011 vintage. For the occasion we have decided to give it a new look.” With respect to the Riserva, Gran Selezione calls for an increase in the amount of Sangiovese in the bottle from 85% to 95% with only a small addition of Merlot (5%), and without the prior edition of 10% of Cabernet. “By changing the composition of the wine, we wanted to make it even more expressive of our terroir and our terroritory, capable of expressing the true nature of Sangiovese.”
